1. Policy Purpose

The CommWeek Scholarship Awards Policy establishes formal guidelines governing the administration, eligibility, review, and distribution of departmental scholarship funds raised through CommWeek activities within the School of Communication (SOC). This policy ensures consistency, transparency, equity, and compliance with university standards and applicable financial aid regulations.

CommWeek scholarships are intended to support student retention, academic excellence, and degree completion for SOC students while advancing the school’s instructional and professional mission.

  1. Scope and Authority

This policy applies exclusively to departmental scholarship awards administered by the School of Communication through CommWeek. It does not supersede University-wide financial aid policies, federal or state aid regulations, or institutional scholarship governance.

Final authority for scholarship awards rests with the School of Communication, subject to specified approval processes and fund availability.

  1. Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a CommWeek Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled in the School of Communication (SOC) at the time of application and award.
  • Maintain good academic standing as defined by the University.
  • Be classified as a freshman, sophomore, junior, or non-spring-graduating senior.
  • Spring semester graduating students are ineligible to apply or receive awards.
  • Submit a complete application by the published deadline.

Applicants are required to disclose accurate and verifiable information, including:

  • Current cumulative GPA
  • Date and source of the most recent scholarship received
  • Date of last CommWeek scholarship received, if applicable

Submission of false or misleading information may result in disqualification or revocation of the award.

  1. Scholarship Categories

4.1 Academic Excellence Scholarship

The Academic Excellence Scholarship recognizes SOC students who demonstrate sustained academic achievement and strong potential for leadership in communication-related disciplines.

Minimum Eligibility Standard

  • Cumulative GPA of 50 or higher at the time of application.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Academic performance and consistency
  • Progress toward degree completion
  • Academic engagement, creative work, research, or leadership within SOC
  • Consideration of prior CommWeek scholarship awards to promote equitable distribution of funds
  • Student classification, with preference given to sophomore and junior students to maximize academic impact

Applicants must submit a written statement outlining academic goals, career objectives, and the anticipated educational benefit of scholarship support.

4.2 Economic Hardship Scholarship

The Economic Hardship Scholarship supports SOC students who demonstrate financial need while maintaining satisfactory academic progress.

Minimum Eligibility Standard

  • Cumulative GPA of 75 or higher at the time of application.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Demonstrated financial need affecting educational access or persistence
  • Academic progress despite economic challenges
  • Limited access to alternative funding sources
  • Consideration of prior scholarship awards to ensure equity and need-based prioritization

Applicants must submit a written statement describing financial circumstances, the impact of scholarship assistance on continued enrollment, and commitment to degree completion.

  1. Review and Selection Process
  • Applications shall be evaluated by a CommWeek Scholarship Review Committee appointed by the CommWeek Committee, and approved by the Dean, School of Communication.
  • Reviewers shall utilize an approved standardized scoring rubric to ensure objectivity and consistency.
  • Scholarship awards are competitive and contingent upon fund availability.
  • The School of Communication reserves the right to limit, defer, or withhold awards as necessary to maintain compliance with university policies.

All decisions of the Review Committee are final and not subject to appeal.

  1. Award Administration and Use of Funds
  • Scholarship funds shall be applied in accordance with university financial aid procedures.
  • Awards may be used to offset tuition, required fees, textbooks, housing, transportation, or other documented educational expenses.
  • Funds are not transferable and may not be deferred without written authorization from the School of Communication.

Failure to maintain eligibility or enrollment status may result in forfeiture of the award.

  1. Compliance and Recordkeeping

The School of Communication shall maintain scholarship records in accordance with university retention policies, including applications, reviewer scores, award decisions, and disbursement documentation. This policy shall be reviewed periodically and updated as necessary to ensure continued compliance with University regulations and best practices.
