Jose Griñán

Broadcast journalist José Griñán was born on July 24, 1952 in Tampa, Florida. His father was a native Cuban; his mother, a first generation Cuban-American. Griñán studied speech and theatre at the University of South Florida, but his interest in broadcasting resulted from his filming and helping to produce documentaries for the U.S. Army.
In 1975, Griñán was hired as a reporter and weekend anchor for KTSM AM-FM-TV in El Paso, Texas. From 1978 to 1982, he worked as a news reporter and anchor for Miami, Florida’s WCKT-TV (now WSVN-TV). Griñán worked as a news anchor for the now defunct Satellite News Channel in 1982 and 1983, before being hired by WTVJ-TV in Miami in 1984, where he stayed until 1990. From 1990 to 1993, he was a correspondent/host for Crime Watch Tonight, and served as a freelance correspondent and researcher for CNN, and other broadcast services. In 1991, he anchored and reported for KDFW-TV in Dallas, Texas, and then, in August of 1993, Griñán joined FOX’s KRIV-TV in Houston, Texas, where he is the senior morning news anchor for the 6:00 a.m., 7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m. and 12 noon newscasts.
Throughout his career, Griñán has covered major events of all types, including floods, hurricanes, the sewer explosion in Guadalajara, Mexico, and the Branch Davidian siege in Waco, Texas, where he was one of the first reporters on the scene. In addition, Griñán has produced a variety of special series reports, and has hosted two public affairs programs for KRIV-TV: “The Black Voice” and “Hola Houston.”
Griñán has been active in the community and has served as a volunteer for the National Kidney Foundation, The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Special Olympics and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, among others. Griñán is also a board member of the Dive Pirate Foundation, the Houston READ Commission, and Keep Houston Beautiful/Clean City America.
Griñán has been a member of the National Association of Black Journalists since 1978, and maintains membership in the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Southwest Alternate Media Project. He is the father of two adult girls.

Karina Hollingsworth

Karina Hollingsworth is a multimedia journalist at KTXS News.

Country living isn’t anything new to her. She was born in Dodson, La and raised in Alexandria, La. She was even chased by a bull once.

Karina received her bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Texas Southern University in 2021 and is currently working on her master’s degree.

While at TSU Karina perfected her craft while working as an MMJ at KTSU2 News. Karina’s most memorable moment while working at KTSU2 News is covering the Astroworld tragedy because that is the moment, she feels she became a professional journalist.

She interned at KPRC2 News in Houston, TX where several of her news packages aired on TV.

Karina used to get in trouble for talking too much in class, so she decided to turn it into a career.

Karina is a proud mother of a Make a Wish Kid who had her wish granted in 2019 to go to Disney World.

In her spare time Karina loves sipping Iced Caramel Macchiatos from Starbucks, doing makeup, dancing to Beyonce, posting pictures on social media and spending time with her two kids.

Joy Sewing

Joy Sewing is a veteran journalist with more than 25 years in the industry. In 2023, she became the Houston Chronicle’s first Black news columnist in the paper’s 122 years. She was previously the culture columnist and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in commentary in 2022.

Joy has worked at the Kansas City Star, New York Post and was a correspondent for People magazine. She also freelanced regularly for Money, Vibe, Shape, Time, Town & Country, and other magazines. As the Chronicle’s former fashion editor, Joy has interviewed hundreds of famous faces, from Oscar de la Renta to Houston’s own Beyoncé Knowles.

Joy holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Houston, a master’s degree in business management from Webster University, and has taught journalism at the University of Central Missouri and the University of Houston.

She is also a National Press Foundation Spanish Language Fellow, in which she lived in Mexico, an España Y América Case Media Fellow, and an Institute for the Advance Studies of Race Fellow, in which she studied racism in Cuba.

In 2021, Joy was one of 15 journalists nationwide selected for the Poynter Insitute’s Power of Diverse Voices journalism fellowship, She also was honored for her columns by the Society for Features Journalism, which called her columns “touching works about humanity.”

She is author of “Ava and the Prince: The Adventures of Two Rescue Pups,” a children’s picture book about her own rescue boxer dogs. The book was selected by the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation Houston for the home-library program. Joy and her dog, Ava, visited more than 100 schools, libraries, and special events to teach young children lessons about reading, animal empathy, and love through her book.

As a community leader, Joy is the founder of Year of Joy, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, to spread joy to children from underserved communities in Houston. Her annual Year of Joy Holiday Ice Skating Party is a holiday tradition and has had more than 1000 children participate since it started in 2016. The Year of Joy Figure Skating Scholar program was launched in 2021 and provides free ice skating lessons to children. A former competitive ice skater, Joy became Houston’s first African American figure skating coach while in college.

Joy is also a foster-to-adoptive mom and has become an advocate for children in foster care and adoption. She’s received the following honors for her work and community service:

Chelsea Edwards

Chelsea Edwards is a fixture on Houston television screens and streaming devices. She’s been a reporter at Fox26 since October 2019. Chelsea first discovered her passion for broadcasting as a student in Hightower High School’s Media Academy. That is where she learned to shoot, write, and edit stories. While studying at TSU, she cut her teeth working behind the scenes through partnerships with NASA and TxDOT, which allowed her to work in productions across the country. After graduating from TSU, she worked as a video editor for Houston’s ABC affiliate. She also spent four years running an afterschool program in Klein ISD.

Chelsea decided to jump in front of the camera and left Houston for a job as a multi-media journalist with KWTX-TV in Waco. She returned to her hometown to be a morning reporter for Fox 26, where she covers everything from community stories to inexpensive getaways through her “One Tank Trip” franchise. You can also catch her filling in at the anchor desk regularly and adding an extra dose of energy to Houston’s Morning Show.

Latashia DeVeaux

Latashia DeVeaux, a seasoned PR and communications executive with 25 years of publicity, event marketing, and talent relations experience with an emphasis in social impact and community partnerships, has worked with clients in the technology, luxury automotive, beauty, and the entertainment industries.

While wearing many hats, Latashia spearheads operations at the Los Angeles-based DeVeaux Agency, DeVeaux Media Group (DMG) and its parent company, DeVeauxted Enterprises, Inc. She is also the Head of Awards and Sr. Director of Talent Relations at BET Media Group. Currently, Latashia serves as the President of Black Public Relations Society of Los Angeles (BPRSLA), PR Chairwoman, Board of Directors for National Association of Multi-Ethnic Communicators (NAMIC SoCal) and Greater Los Angeles African American Chambers of Commerce (GLAAACC). She formerly served as an Advisory Board Member Texas Southern University – School of Communication (TSU).

Over the course of Latashia’s career, she’s had stints at Rogers & Cowan, Universal Music, Disney, Essence, and YP. She also served as a Multicultural Marketing Manager for Universal Pictures where she spearheaded niche multicultural marketing campaigns for the studio’s original DVD release of Jarhead, Outkast’s Idyllwild, Bring It On 3, and Dave Chappelle’s Block Party. During her time at Walt Disney Studios, she assisted with the marketing and legal affairs on blockbuster films including Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. She also produced an All-Star PSA benefitting Black AIDS Institute as well as a Starz documentary on our favorite former President, Barack Obama, where she oversaw all talent procurement and relations.

Recently, Latashia brokered a deal with the United States Armed Forces Entertainment (AFCENT) and executed the first-ever BIG3 players and WNBA Middle East Tour to visit the troops. During this time, Latashia managed and oversaw all publicity, negotiations and talent relations for all participating athletes and traveled across four Middle East countries over 14 days. “This was the most rewarding experience of my career and I’ve worked on some amazing projects!” Latashia holds two bachelors’ degrees in Political Science and African-American Studies with a minor in Sociology from California State University, Northridge and master’s degree from University of Southern California.

Ashley F.G. Norwood

Ashley F.G. Norwood is an assistant professor of Multimedia Journalism at Jackson State University. Norwood earned her Bachelors in English at Jackson State University and a Masters in Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Mississippi. She is an award-winning journalist. Formerly at Mississippi Public Broadcasting, Norwood was a senior radio news reporter and executive producer of the public affairs television show @Issue.

Norwood is founder of FG Media Productions, LLC and Executive Producer at Red Squared Communication Design Company in Jackson. She is passionate about documentary filmmaking and movement journalism that affects change in Black communities. Much of Norwood’s published work focuses on issues involving race, health, poverty and education.

Ken Okere

TSU alumnus, Dr. Ken Ike Okere, is a Journalist, editor, corporate communications professional, and digital media specialist. Ike’s experience spans: Print, Radio, TV, and Digital Media, and Corporate Communications. He has been Correspondent for ThisWeek/Houston Chronicle, Online Editor for African News Digest , Correspondent, Guardian Newspaper Houston, Editor African News Digest Weekly Houston, Producer PRTV Jos, Managing Editor Nigeria Yellow Pages, Director Corporate Communications, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN-Radio Nigeria), Director Radio Nigeria Lagos, Zonal Director Radio Nigeria South-East, and Director National Broadcast Academy Lagos.

In a 15-year stellar career with Radio Nigeria, Dr. Okere supervised the running of 10 radio stations (3 in Lagos, and 7 in South East Nigeria) as Director, successfully rebranding some and winning industry awards such as the 2018 NMNA merit award for Best Radio Station in the SE & 3rd nationwide (FRCN Coal City FM Enugu) and confirmed by MPS Q1 2019 ratings. As Head of the newly created Corporate Development & Communications Directorate, the strategy hub of the huge corporation, Ike led a range of activities that modernized the 80-year old huge radio network: creating its first website; its first online content; and its first online live audio streaming service. Other firsts include, the institution of modern audience research, excellence awards and e-newsletters (plus a print edition). He has been a strong advocate for the full digitization and rebranding of the influential public broadcaster, crafting in 2010 a Corporate Plan meant to position the Corporation on the path of strategic growth, profitability and modernization.

Dr. Okere is currently the Rector, West Africa Broadcast & Media Academy (WABMA), the multi campus, multi platform media training and certification academy located in Abuja, Enugu, and Lagos, with campuses opening soon in Ghana, Cameroun and The Gambia.

Dr. Okere’s passion for strategic planning, digitization, training and new media has led him to many successful consultancies for national and international organisations such as Ford Foundation, Christian Aid, BBC Media Action, and US Consulate General Lagos, among others.

Kathleen McElroy

Kathleen McElroy is a professor in the School of Journalism and Media at The University of Texas at Austin.

She received her Ph.D. from the School of Journalism in December 2014, after nearly 30 years as a professional journalist. At The New York Times, she held various management positions, including associate managing editor, dining editor, deputy sports editor and deputy editor of the website. She previously worked for The National, an all-sports daily and Newsday on Long Island as well as the Austin American-Statesman, The Huntsville Item and the Bryan-College Station Eagle in Texas.

While earning her doctorate, she was a Harrington Graduate Fellow and received awards for teaching and research. Her research interests include racial discourse, collective memory, sports media and obituaries.

She previously was an assistant professor at Oklahoma State University, where she taught news reporting and sports media.

She received a Masters of Arts from New York University, with a focus on race and media, and a Bachelor of Arts in broadcast journalism from Texas A&M.

    Ted Irving

    As the Director for Houston Television (HTV), I am a culture change agent and a mass media influencer with over 30 years of experience in documentary film making, stock footage creation, and media instruction. I am also a Japan Fulbright Scholar with a keen interest in educational exchange and cross-cultural communication.

    I work with the leadership team to transform HTV into a modern and dynamic media outlet that serves the diverse and growing audience of Houston. I oversee the project management, video editing, graphic design, and special effects of all live broadcasts and in-house productions, ensuring the highest quality and professionalism. I also mentor and empower the staff to enhance their skills and creativity, and foster a collaborative and inclusive work culture. My mission is to deliver engaging and informative content that showcases the achievements, challenges, and opportunities of the city and its people.

    Andrew McCray

    Andrew McCray is currently the Media Graphics Specialist/University Photographer at Texas Southern University. 

    He is a proud graduate of Texas Southern University, coming to TSU on a Track Scholarship as an All-American. These high standards would be his mainstay. Being one of the first graduates from the University’s print graphics curriculum, combining photography, printing, art and communications. This was the foundation that inspired him to pursue this vastly expanding field. He has worked in Photography and Graphics for over 35 years, teaching photography/graphics at Ace Technology School and coaching some high school state qualifiers (Smiley) and NCAA qualifiers in track & field. 

    While working as TSU’s Student Publications Manager, Andrew helped the university publish its first yearbook and newspaper on a desktop digital platform and win two national awards for best photography, graphics, and editorial in a college yearbook and newspaper. He is passionate about working in all media platforms for photography (fashion, landscape, sports, events, and studio products) and has a wide range of knowledge in the areas of graphics, printing, art, and video technology. 

    Along with the belief that there are many ways to improve your craft. Also, a large part of him is one of sharing and mentoring.
